How to Prepare for your Sleep StudyDo

  • Make sure your hair is clean and dry before you arrive at the sleep center.
  • Relax.  A calm frame of mind will enable you to sleep well.
  • Stick to your normal routine on the night of the study. This includes:
  • Taking your medications (unless your doctor advises you not to)
  • Regular food intake, avoiding caffeine

Do Not

  • Use hairspray or mousse on the day of the study. These could stop the sensors from working properly.
  • Nap on the day of the study as this may impair your sleep at night.
  • Wear nail polish.
  • Consume caffeine the day of your study

Approximate Timeline

  • Arrive at the lab at your scheduled arrival time – Please be on time
  • Fill out forms – about 15-30 minutes
  • Light bedtime snack, optional (please note that we do not provide snacks, but you can opt to bring snacks for yourself)
  • Change into sleepwear and get ready for bed – about 10-15 minutes
  • Attachment of electrodes (“hookup procedure”) – about 45-60 minutes
  • Bathroom, Light Reading/Wind Down – about 15-30 minutes if time permits
  • Equipment Calibration – about 5-10 minutes
  • Bed time/Lights out – Sleep Study recording begins 
  • Lights on – Sleep Study recording ends between 5:00-5:30am
  • Taking off electrodes – about 15-20 minutes
  • Change out of sleepwear and start your day – about 15-20 minutes*Please schedule a follow-up exam with your referring or primary care physician 3-4 weeks after your study to discuss your sleep study lab results.

Please download and complete the required forms for patient registration, to be submitted on the night of your study.  If you do not have access to a printer, you may pick up a packet at our office, or fill out the forms upon your arrival to your scheduled appointment. We can also mail the forms to you; please contact us to make arrangements. Note that it may take 2-3 business days for the delivery of regular mail.
